So Many Flowers

Summer is here and that means flowers. So many flowers.

Throughout the spring we’ve been sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings, weeding, putting up supports, and weeding again. Now the fields are filling with color and they could hardly be prettier.

Last year we had one small sweet pea field. This year we’ve planted that field with some varieties that are new to us. We each picked a few favorites from some fabulous seed suppliers. Apricot Cream, Mrs. Bernard Jones, Clotted Cream, Balmoral and more are starting to bloom and it’s hard to remember which one we each liked the most. They are all so pretty.

We saved so many sweet pea seeds from last year’s plants that we were able to fill four new beds. These new sweet pea beds are the backdrop for our newly planted guesthouse field. And it is going to be gorgeous. We have cosmos and dahlias, snapdragon and stock, statice and celosia, flowers we are growing for the first time and favorites from the past two years. This field is new to us and it is big. Tucked away just beyond the Airbnb Farm Kitchen Guesthouse, the flower field is a hidden gem with a sweet shady spot for sunny afternoons.

This growing season, a local farmer who had leased fields at Farm Kitchen for over 20 years decided to downsize and did not renew. We found ourselves with the lovely opportunity to plant dahlias in the pavilion field so we dug in and planted 600 of our favorites. We filled in extra spaces with branching sunflowers and colorful giant zinnias. We can’t wait to see how this blooming backdrop brightens the weddings and other events that Farm Kitchen will be hosting this summer and fall.

And best of all, we get to share these flowers with you. In just a few days we will open the first field for our U-Picks. You’ll be welcome to wander the guesthouse field and breathe in the fragrant sweet peas as you gather your own bouquet. Our U-Picks will be in two different formats. We will have Flowers & Fika on Tuesdays from 11 am - 4 pm. These weekly events will be $40 and will include a container for you to take out in the field, wander the rows and take your time harvesting your flowers. Then you’ll take a walk over to the pavilion for lovely complimentary refreshments.

Our more simple U-Picks will be on Thursdays from 9-11 am and 5-7 pm and will be $20. We will provide a jar for the flowers that you pick and allow for plenty of time to wander and enjoy!

A few helpful notes about our U-Picks:

  • Bring your own snips or borrow ours. Please be aware that our snips are very sharp, so use with caution and assist any children by harvesting their flowers for them.

  • We will provide a jar for your flowers. Fill it as you like, keeping in mind that you don’t want to crush the blooms.

  • Children are welcome to come along but please keep them close. We have farm equipment, electric fencing, uneven ground and planted rows to be avoided.

  • We are sorry but we ask that you please leave your dog at home.

  • Please park in the parking lot and we will meet you by the black door at the front patio of the white event barn.
